Dean B. Pruette, superintendent of High Point schools, has been notified that a planned trip to Japan by 20 North Carolina educators has been canceled. Pruette was one of those planning the trip to study curriculum in Japanese schools and had figured in the criticism by a number of state legislators who opposed the trip. They contended that Pruette is retiring and could not make use of what he learned on the trip. However, the.

opposition apparently was aimed primarily at Superintendent of Public Instruction Craig Phillips for planning the trip at this time when state funds are scarce. Lexington Man Earns Degree The Rev. Mark Hodges, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Hodges of Lexington and a graduate of East Davidson High School near Thomasville, received the bachelor of theology degree from Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem on May By DON WRENN Enterprise Staff Writer ASHEBORO Randolph potter Jerry Fenberg, released from jail Wednesday, after his arrest on Tuesday for protesting the construction of sewer lines to the North Carolina state 200, was back on the same site this morning to continue his effort to halt construction of the almost $1-million project.

Fenberg and his wife Charlotte were joined in their peaceful protest this morning by about eight young supporters from Asheboro and Randolph Technical Institute. The group set themselves up on land adjacent to the dirt road where Fenberg and his wife were arrested Tuesday as they sat in the road, halting the progress of a backhoe which was digging ditches for the sewer lines. The dirt road is located just off Cox Road about half way between Asheboro and the 200. Fenberg said this morning he was not opposed to the entire sewer project but only to the loop which takes. in Rickland Creek.

Without elaborating, he said the county would have saved considerable money by running the lines straight rather than including the half-mile loop which requires two pumping stations. Centennial Street in pre-dawn hours this morning. The men, Stanley Eugene Fenner, 25, of Grace Street and James Hubert Manning, 27, of Asheboro, were allegedly seen taking three bottles of wine from the store by witnesses. The witnesses chased the pair and detained them until police arrived. In another case a witness saw three men leave their car and attempt to kick in the CHAIR CITY (FROM PAGE 1D) missioners, however, don't enjoy the luxury of tailoring their budget to match the desired tax rate. They are considering raising the county tax rate anywhere from 35 to 100 per cent to meet budgetary needs.

Williams said one reason the city has been able to avoid that problem is that revenue-sharing money has been held in reserve. About $150,000 of revenuesharing money will be used next fiscal. year for administration and capital improvements in the city, Williams said. That will include completion sometime this fall of the water plant and construction of the new muncipal fire station on National Highway. Other revenue-sharing money will be spent for HOUSING (FROM PAGE 1D) to consider an application for a grant from the Dept.

of Housing and Urban Development. The application, calling for 000 worth of "extraordinary maintenance," was unanimously approved. The money will be spent at the Daniel Brooks. Astor Dowdy Towers and J.C. Morgan projects.

supplies and equipment for the city, Williams said. The city's thoroughfare plan will get some attention in the upcoming budget. Williams said the city's requests have been discussed with state road planners who are expected to notify the city soon on how much money it can expect for road projects. The school system is asking for increases which it says are necessary for operating the city schools. Those requests have not been fully reviewed, Williams said, and he could offer no comment on them.

back door of Swaim Manufacturing Co. on Davidson Street Wednesday. When the witness approached the three men they ran away through the woods toward Surrett Drive, he told police. A fourth man, the driver of the car, also escaped. Nothing was taken in the break-in attempt.

Police took three boys, two 14- and one 15-years-old, into custody on a charge of larceny of a purse belonging to Clarnie Louise Kennedy of Rt. 4, Thomasville, from a coin laundry on English Road March 27. A warrant for a 16- year-old boy was also being issued according to police. A 12-year-old boy was taken into custody for the alleged common law robbery of Joseph Slack on March 25. The boy, along.

Charlotte 'Space: 1999' New Odyssey For TV By JAY SHARBUTT AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) 1999" is a new syndicated TV series about an international group of earthlings adrift in space. Next September, they'll try to lock on to Trek" fans in more than 100 U.S.

cities. That's the word from Abe Mandell, head of Independent Television which is distributing the made-in-England, tailored-forAmerica science fiction series here. He says the one-hour show is trying to attract the large, loyal and vocal clan of sci-fi buffs who still devotedly watch reruns of "Star Trek," which NBC canceled in 1969 after three seasons on the air. "We're not going into this blind," Mandell says. got $6.5 million invested in the show.

We did a lot of research and it proved to us that out there in television land, all over the world, is a vast cadre of science fiction nuts. They love the stuff, right? "Now 'Star Trek' has done phenomenally well. The old reruns are still tops in their time period. But it's getting a little tired and running out of gas. those fans out there are waiting for something new." stars the husband-and-wife team of Martin Landau and Barbara Bain from the old "Mission Impossible" series and Barry Morse, the detective who used to chase David Janssen in "The Fugitive." All but three of the 101 stations that have signed up are network affiliates, he said, and claimed that at least 85 per cent of those affiliates may air the show in prime evening time next fall. He said they've told him they plan, to preempt what they consider their network's weakest series in the so-called "family hour show "Space: 1999! in.

that time period next fall. Mandell, who calls the new series a network-budgeted, network-quality show," said ITC initially took it to all three networks but rang up three no-sales and had to go.the syndicated route. However, he says he expects it to be such a hit next season that a network will be forced to buy it for 1976-77. "We're going to have to do it the hard way, but I'm going to prove: the networks wrong this time." he said.
