𝐔𝐊 5-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 2024 𝐭𝐨 2029 The government has launched a new five-year plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in a bid to improve public health and strengthen ties with industry.The plan is a collaboration between the Department of Health and Social Care,the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the UK Health Security Agency.The plan has nine strategic outcomes, centred around four key themes, which include: -Reducing the need for, and unintentional exposure to, antimicrobials-Optimising the use of antimicrobials-Investing in innovation, supply, and access-Being a good global partnerThe plan will support the UK’s 20-year vision for AMR, which will see it contained, controlled, and mitigated to protect public health.Health minister, Maria Caulfield, said: “𝑨𝒍𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 8,000 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑼𝑲 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒅𝒓𝒖𝒈-𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓. Presentation Alert!In our study accepted for presentation Global Health Security Agenda 2024 conference, we showcased the feasibility of establishing centralized, local production of quality-controlled, affordable Alcohol-Based Hand Rub (ABHR) on a district-wide scale. This initiative enhances healthcare workers' and community locations' access to and utilization of ABHR during infectious disease outbreaks in low-resource countries. This research significantly bolsters the case for ABHR as the primary method for Hand Hygiene (HH) in Healthcare Facilities (HCFs) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), rather than merely being a supplement to handwashing. On average, it took 11 days to set up a fully functional production unit. Implementing a water distribution system for handwashing would neither match this speed nor be as cost-effective.
