This week I'm digging a bit deeper into information on getting involved in academic publishing as a university student (especially an undergraduate student).If you have a student in your life, it can be really useful to have a conversation with them about the myriad of different opportunities available to them on the university campus or as a university student. One of these is publishing in student-led or student-run academic journals.This is especially useful for students who are interested in pursuing further academic studies at postgraduate level, as it will give them insight into what academic writing is like and how the process of getting published in an academic journal works.I didn't know anything about opportunities to publish academic work as an undergraduate, and honestly didn't really hear about it until I started my doctoral studies. The first time I ever submitted something for publication was as a masters student and was in an actual academic journal, and it was no surprise that my work was rejected. I finally got the opportunity to take advantage of student-run academic journals towards the end of my doctoral studies, and I'm very glad I did. Be transparent about the limitations of your study and the uncertainties that exist within your findings. Share your ideas, exchange perspectives, and provide constructive feedback to one another. Present at conferences, publish in reputable journals, and participate in scholarly conversations. Embarking on a thesis project can be overwhelming due to the sheer amount of academic research available. Right?That's why it's crucial to navigate this vast information landscape efficiently to prevent your thesis from stalling. But let's take a moment to step back. It's only natural to feel overwhelmed when considering the plethora of academic articles published on your topic. However, you don't need to read EVERY SINGLE article ever written on your subject.One key skill to master is discerning which literature is most relevant to your research. You don't have to spend countless hours reading academic articles in their entirety, especially if they contain information you won't use. Start by finding sources that interest you and browse the reference list of an intriguing article. Another valuable tool is the 'cited by' button if you're using Google Scholar. This method can lead you to other relevant literature that you may not have otherwise discovered.Reading abstracts is an excellent starting point. They provide a concise study summary and can help you determine whether an article is relevant to your research topic. If it aligns with your research, delve deeper into the paper and take detailed notes.In your journey towards successfully completing your thesis, one helpful strategy is to build a concept map. This visual representation helps organize and connect your thoughts, giving you a clear understanding of your research trajectory.Remember, research is a journey. It's a process of exploration and learning that will strengthen your understanding of your chosen field.

When I started my career in scholarly publishing 16+ years ago, only the most prescient scholastic seers could have predicted the scale and severity of modern-day research misconduct. It's discouraging, to say the least.
