Supporting university students in completing their degrees by helping them learn 'How to University'

This week I'm digging a bit deeper into information on getting involved in academic publishing as a university student (especially an undergraduate student). If you have a student in your life, it can be really useful to have a conversation with them about the myriad of different opportunities available to them on the university campus or as a university student. One of these is publishing in student-led or student-run academic journals. This is especially useful for students who are interested in pursuing further academic studies at postgraduate level, as it will give them insight into what academic writing is like and how the process of getting published in an academic journal works.I didn't know anything about opportunities to publish academic work as an undergraduate, and honestly didn't really hear about it until I started my doctoral studies. The first time I ever submitted something for publication was as a masters student and was in an actual academic journal, and it was no surprise that my work was rejected. I finally got the opportunity to take advantage of student-run academic journals towards the end of my doctoral studies, and I'm very glad I did. It has given me a much more detailed understanding of all aspects of academic publication in journals, and I'll get into more details about these experiences in future weeks. If this information is useful to you, you can find more resources on My Academic Family, CIC's website at: https://lnkd.in/eQPdW2Zp

🌱 Embracing Academic Humility: A Powerful Strategy for your Dissertation Process 🎓In the pursuit of knowledge and scholarly achievement, academic humility plays a pivotal role in the dissertation process. Recognizing the limits of our own understanding and being open to the insights of others can significantly enhance the quality and impact of our research. Here's a strategy to cultivate academic humility throughout your dissertation journey:1️⃣ Embrace a Growth Mindset: Approach your research with a growth mindset, understanding that there is always room for improvement and learning. Embrace the idea that your dissertation is an opportunity to contribute to knowledge and engage in a dialogue with existing literature.2️⃣ Seek Diverse Perspectives: Actively seek out diverse viewpoints and perspectives related to your research topic. Engage with scholars, attend conferences, participate in seminars, and collaborate with researchers from different backgrounds. 3️⃣ Be Open to Feedback: View feedback as an invaluable gift. Embrace constructive criticism from your advisors, peers, and experts in the field. Approach feedback with a willingness to learn, adapt, and refine your research. This process of continuous improvement will strengthen the rigor and validity of your work.4️⃣ Acknowledge Limitations and Uncertainty: Recognize that every research study has limitations and that knowledge is constantly evolving. Be transparent about the limitations of your study and the uncertainties that exist within your findings. This demonstrates intellectual honesty and fosters a culture of academic humility.5️⃣ Engage in Peer Collaboration: Collaborate with your fellow researchers and engage in scholarly discussions. Share your ideas, exchange perspectives, and provide constructive feedback to one another. Embracing collaboration not only strengthens your research but also encourages a collective approach to knowledge creation.6️⃣ Reflect and Self-Assess: Set aside time for regular reflection on your research process and outcomes. Engage in self-assessment to identify areas where you can improve and expand your knowledge. 7️⃣ Contribute to the Academic Community: Actively contribute to the academic community by sharing your research findings, insights, and experiences. Present at conferences, publish in reputable journals, and participate in scholarly conversations. Sharing your work allows others to learn from your research and engage in fruitful discussions.Remember, academic humility is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of strength and intellectual maturity. By embracing this strategy, you will foster a culture of collaboration, openness, and intellectual growth throughout your dissertation process. Together, let's contribute to the advancement of knowledge and make a lasting impact in our respective fields. 🌟

"Scholars and publishers have our own unique areas of expertise, responsibilities, and experiences of the manifold crises into which higher education is perpetually forced. But at base, scholars’ working conditions are publishers’ working conditions. If we want to change these conditions, we have to begin by recognizing—and working together to find—our common ground. Manufactured austerity; corporatization; competition over supposedly scarce resources; attrition and downsizing; mass PhD production; adjunctification; shrinking enrollments; escalating expectations to publish or perish; and, of course, the ongoing devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic and the right’s war against academic freedom: these issues affect us all."https://lnkd.in/eRUviM8V

Embarking on a thesis project can be overwhelming due to the sheer amount of academic research available. Right? That's why it's crucial to navigate this vast information landscape efficiently to prevent your thesis from stalling. But let's take a moment to step back. It's only natural to feel overwhelmed when considering the plethora of academic articles published on your topic. However, you don't need to read EVERY SINGLE article ever written on your subject. One key skill to master is discerning which literature is most relevant to your research. You don't have to spend countless hours reading academic articles in their entirety, especially if they contain information you won't use. Start by finding sources that interest you and browse the reference list of an intriguing article. Another valuable tool is the 'cited by' button if you're using Google Scholar. This method can lead you to other relevant literature that you may not have otherwise discovered.Reading abstracts is an excellent starting point. They provide a concise study summary and can help you determine whether an article is relevant to your research topic. If it aligns with your research, delve deeper into the paper and take detailed notes. In your journey towards successfully completing your thesis, one helpful strategy is to build a concept map. This visual representation helps organize and connect your thoughts, giving you a clear understanding of your research trajectory.Remember, research is a journey. It's a process of exploration and learning that will strengthen your understanding of your chosen field.

When I started my career in scholarly publishing 16+ years ago, only the most prescient scholastic seers could have predicted the scale and severity of modern-day research misconduct. It's discouraging, to say the least. While publishers continue to play whack-a-mole to catch the offenders, the only sustainable solution anyone can point to is a change in the academic system: as long as careers depend on the academic currency of citations, research misconduct will adapt and flourish. The reward system has to change. This article in the The Chronicle of Higher Education by Domingo Docampo gives an excellent overview of the prevalent problem with citation cartels. Anyone who serves as a STEM journal editor or reviewer should read it:https://lnkd.in/gwcyD9yz#publicationethics #researchmisconduct #scholarlypublishing
