Robert Motherwell by Mel Gooding Pdf

A number of Robert Motherwell's most important early works were collage-paintings, beginning with his first effort in the spring of 1943, "Pierrot's Hat," made while working alongside Jackson Pollock in the latter's studio. "I took to collage like a duck to water," Motherwell later reflected, and he continued to "play with papers" for the rest of his life, esteeming his skill in the medium as one of his "chief gifts." Collage also helped the artist reconcile his relationship to European modernism (particularly Surrealism) on the one hand, and American Abstract Expressionism on the other. Reproducing a concise selection of collages from throughout the artist's career in full color, this volume also includes a series of "case studies" on individual collages and broader essays by critic Mel Gooding that examine their composition, palette and literary allusions, and Motherwell's unique position bridging Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.

Robert Motherwell On Paper by Robert Motherwell Pdf

The Abstract Expressionist artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was best known as a painter, but he also created a remarkable body of works on paper. The drawings, prints, and collages in this book show a more intimate side of his visual sensibility; they reveal the very personal "handwriting" of the artist as he responded to the subtleties of paper, both as a medium and a material. Motherwell was in fact a most extraordinary draftsman, as this volume testifies. Reproduced in color and in a generous format are more than a hundred of the artist's finest works on paper. The book is published to accompany an exhibition at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University - an exhibition that was conceived and developed in discussions with the artist during the final year of his life. For this celebration of Motherwell's creative legacy, David Rosand has gathered a distinguished group of contributors. Together, their essays on different aspects of Motherwell's work create a complex picture of a multifaceted artist.

Robert Motherwell by Mary Ann Caws Pdf

Robert Motherwell was by far the most intellectual and articulate of the Abstract Expressionists. This book, written by a friend of the artist, the well-known writer and critic Mary Ann Caws, examines Motherwell’s way of thinking and writing in relation to his paintings. The artist, American by birth, yet simultaneously American and European in his way of visualizing and vocalizing artistic and philosophical traditions, always worked between these two poles, and it is this tension that imbues his œuvre with its particular intensity. The author bases her analysis of Motherwell on the artist’s own writings and readings, as well as on extensive conversations and interviews with him. She considers his work and interests in relation to those of other Abstract Expressionists as well as to the work of the Surrealists. Her book highlights his deep attraction to France and French literature and art, and his concern with the idea of elegy and the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. His singularly American spirit provided him with a manner of painting and thinking unique among the Abstract Expressionists, as well as with a distinctive and highly personal filter through which to interpret his fascination with European literature and history.

Robert Motherwell by Mary Ann Caws,Robert Motherwell Pdf

An eloquent personal exploration by a close friend, Robert Motherwell: What Art Holds is an essential addition to the literature on the artist and his work. Richly illustrated with pieces spanning his career - including twenty-one color platesthe book also includes never-before-published photographs of the artist himself. Mary Ann Caws discusses the artist's paintings, drawings, and collages in relation to the wide variety of American and European literature and philosophy Motherwell saw as central to his art. In a progression of critical meditations, Caws looks closely at series of his works, such as In Plato's Cave and Night Music, and at such great individual pieces as Gift, her inquiry gracefully encompassing the writings of Frost, Baudelaire, Mallarme, Kierkegaard, Stevens, and Garcia Lorca. Her reflections are grounded in an essential agreement with Motherwell that his work was a continuum: that his life and art were a matter of process, journey, and becoming, shaped by a willingness to experiment and to start over. Always returning to the uniquely American themes of openness and possibility in the artist's work, Caws explores Motherwell's use of series, his bold color combinations representing such complex issues as solitude and death, and the idea of giving and receiving seen in his technique of collage. The book concludes with five thoughtful interviews between Caws and Motherwell, published here for the first time, featuring discussions of the artist's relationship to surrealism, to Joseph Cornell, and to Mallarme. Infused with the special knowledge derived from a personal communion with Robert Motherwell's art, Mary Ann Caw's work will be an immeasurable source of discovery for lovers of both art and literature.
